In the scramble to respond to COVID-19, I forgot to announce that my new book, A Comprehensive Guide to the Fair Labor Standards Act for Public Employers, was published on March 16th! I’ve been working on this for a good three years, using your questions as a guide.
A Comprehensive Guide to the Fair Labor Standards Act for Public Employers covers exempt and nonexempt classification, compensable time (including on-call time, rest, meal and sleep time, gap time and training and travel time), overtime (including the fluctuating workweek, compensatory time off, second jobs for the same employer, the occasional and sporadic exception, and shift substitutions) and that all-important, illusive, and exasperating regular rate. It includes coverage of the many special rules for law enforcement and firefighters. And it has an up-to-date discussion of the difference between employees and independent contractors.
The rules governing how you pay your employees and who gets overtime haven’t changed during the COVID-19 pandemic and the FLSA and its complicated rules will be here long after the provisions of the FFCRA have expired. So get your copy now!
The price of the book is $30.00 and you can order it here.
And just in case you think I’m pushing this book because I earn some portion of its price, rest assured: I do not! School of Government faculty do not receive any part of the proceeds from the sale of our publications. In fact, the School of Government rarely earns back its costs in publishing our materials. I wrote this book because the demand for guidance on FLSA issues is great. I believe you will find a desk-side reference useful. I wrote it with you in mind.
